Serving on a jury is a fundamental civic duty that upholds the integrity of our judicial system. While we understand that jury service can sometimes be an inconvenience, it is an essential responsibility that ensures legal decisions are made fairly and impartially by a group of peers. By participating, citizens help protect the constitutional right to a trial by jury, which is vital for maintaining justice and public trust in the legal process. This commitment not only reinforces democratic principles but also strengthens the rule of law, making jury service an important contribution to the functioning of society.
Qualifications TO SERVE AS A JUROR
To qualify for jury service in Tangipahoa Parish, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Be a citizen of the United States and the State of Louisiana, and have resided in Tangipahoa Parish for at least one year immediately preceding jury service.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Be able to read, write, and speak the English language with sufficient understanding.
Not be interdicted or incapable of serving due to a mental or physical infirmity (note: hearing loss alone does not disqualify you).
Not be under indictment, incarcerated, or on probation or parole for a felony offense within five years immediately preceding jury service.
Exemptions from Jury Service
Louisiana law allows certain exemptions and waivers:
Age: If you are over the age of 70, you may claim this exemption. If you wish to serve on the jury, you need not claim this exemption.
Recent Service: If you have served on a jury within the last two (2) years, you may claim this exemption. If you wish to serve on the jury, you need not claim this exemption.
NO EXEMPTION IS AUTOMATIC. TO CLAIM AN EXEMPTION:
Your request should be in writing and state which of the exemptions you are claiming.
You must provide a copy of your state-issued ID showing your date of birth or proof of prior service to claim this exemption.

postponements/deferrals
If you are unable to serve on the scheduled date, you have the right to postpone/defer jury service one time if you have a valid reason. To receive a postponement/deferral:
If the date of your jury service conflicts with school, vacation, work, or any other matters, you can contact the Clerk of Court’s Office by the methods previously mentioned to reschedule your jury service. This is a One-Time Deferment and can be rescheduled up to six (6) months out.
ATTIRE
When reporting for jury duty, please ensure your attire is appropriate. Business attire is recommended, including slacks, jeans, blouses, blazers, and dresses. The following items are not permitted in the courtroom: shorts, tank tops, sundresses, miniskirts, and flip-flops. Courtrooms are often kept at a cool temperature, so bringing a jacket or sweater is advisable.
