Qualifications TO SERVE AS A JUROR
To qualify for jury service in Tangipahoa Parish, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Be a citizen of the United States and the State of Louisiana, and have resided in Tangipahoa Parish for at least one year immediately preceding jury service.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Be able to read, write, and speak the English language with sufficient understanding.
Not be interdicted or incapable of serving due to a mental or physical infirmity (note: hearing loss alone does not disqualify you).
Not be under indictment, incarcerated, or on probation or parole for a felony offense within five years immediately preceding jury service.
Exemptions from Jury Service
Louisiana law allows certain exemptions and waivers:
Age: If you are over the age of 70, you may claim this exemption. If you wish to serve on the jury, you need not claim this exemption.
Recent Service: If you have served on a jury within the last two years, you may claim this exemption. If you wish to serve on the jury, you need not claim this exemption.
If you feel you do not meet the above qualifications or wish to claim an exemption, you must contact the Judge’s Chambers by phone at (985) 748-9445 and press extension #8 to speak to the receptionist.
postponements
If you are unable to serve on the scheduled date, you have the right to postpone jury service one time if you have a valid reason. To receive a postponement:
The request must be made before your scheduled appearance, either in person, by phone, email, or in writing.
You must contact the Clerk of Courts Office and select a future jury service date within six months of the original date when the court will be in session.
ATTIRE
When reporting for jury duty, please ensure your attire is appropriate. Business attire is recommended, including slacks, jeans, blouses, blazers, and dresses. The following items are not permitted in the courtroom: shorts, tank tops, sundresses, miniskirts, and flip-flops. Courtrooms are often kept at a cool temperature, so bringing a jacket or sweater is advisable.
