SELF-REPRESENTED LITIGANTS (SRL)

An individual who appears in court without legal representation is referred to as “self-represented” or “pro se,” a Latin term meaning “for oneself.” While you have the legal right to represent yourself, it is strongly recommended that you seek the advice and representation of an attorney whenever possible.

If your matter involves criminal charges, you should contact the Public Defender’s Office to determine whether you qualify for their assistance.

The information provided here is intended to help individuals without legal counsel understand the general rules and procedures governing civil court cases in Louisiana. It is not a comprehensive guide to the law and does not address every issue or circumstance that may affect your case.

This material is not a substitute for state laws or court rules. Its purpose is to offer general guidance and make the process of self-representation more accessible. Please note that while you have the right to represent yourself, you are responsible for complying with all applicable court rules and procedures.
