The hearing office for the court hears child support, paternity and protective order cases. Based upon the evidence, the hearing office makes factual findings and recommendations to the judge regarding the disposition of the case. If either party objects to the hearing officer’s recommendation, they may file a written exception within three days stating the factual findings and recommendations to which they object. The exception will be set for a de novo hearing before the judge. The judge may accept or reject any finding or recommendation made by the hearing office. If neither party timely files an exception the judge will sign the recommendation which will become the judgment of the court. The judgment then may be appealed to the First Circuit Court of Appeal as any other civil judgment.
